SFC Lance Scott Cornett—KIA 3 Feb 2006 FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service) Sgt. 1st Class Lance S. Cornett, 33, a special operations team member assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Ft. Bragg, N.C., was was killed in action Feb. 3, 2006. He died from injuries sustained while engaging the enemy during a firefight in the vicinity of Ramadi. IN REMEMBRANCE OF Lance Cornett: “Lance was my Team Leader then my PSG for a few years in Fco 51st IN (LRSC). Spc Zachariah W. Long, Spc Lyle Griffin, and Spc Michael T. Gleason, Died 30 May 2003 U.S. Department of Defense News Release, June 2, 2003. Release No: 385-03 June 02, 2003 DoD Identifies Army Casualty The Department of Defense announced today that three soldiers were killed on May 30, in Mosul, Iraq, while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. They are: Spc. Zachariah W. Long, 20, of Milton, Pa., Spc. Michael T. Gleason, 25, of Warren, Pa., and Spc. Kyle A. Griffin, 20, of Emerson, N.J. The three soldiers were traveling in a three-vehicle convoy during a storm from Mosul to Tikrit (2 HUMMVs, 1 light medium tactical vehicle). A civilian vehicle dodged a pothole causing the HUMMVs to swerve. There was not enough stopping distance between the vehicles causing the LMTV to swerve off the road and turn over, causing the death of three soldiers. The soldiers were assigned to the 519th Military Intelligence Battalion, Fort Bragg, N.C. *** San Diego Memorial page on which these men are featured. Kyle Griffin’s name appears in the list in The State of New Jersey’s Fallen Heroes Memorial. “We had the honor to meet Lance Cornett in April 1999 in Wilmington, NC, when he was an SSG with F/51st LRS. He was in charge of the honor guard detail from his unit that had been sent from Ft. Bragg for the memorial service for Col. William C. Maus., the former CO for F/51st LRP in Vietnam. We were privileged to meet fine young men like Lance Cornett who were following in the footsteps of their forefathers. God bless his family.
